Toronto As I see

Streets of Toronto

The streets of Toronto are definitely different than other cities in the world. The streets here usually have at least one sidewalk on a side. Where the population gets thinner, the sidewalks vanishes. The sidewalks are also used for bicycle. With sidewalks all over Toronto, one can go on bicycle almost throughout the town. A map with bicycle route can help to know where one can go on bicycle. The streets in south Toronto are relatively narrower than the streets in north, east and west. One can notice the difference when there is huge snow to be cleaned up. Wider streets help snow plough to clean up snow and wider sidewalks also help snow plough to clean up the sidewalks.

Among the important streets of Toronto, one must know about the existence of the Yonge Street, the longest street in Canada. The streets and avenues on the east side of Yonge is referred as "East" side and streets and avenues on the west side of Yonge is referred as "West" side. For example, Bathurst and Steeles intersection is on Steeles West. Whereas Leslie and Steeles intersection is on Steeles East.

As you might notice in the photo above, you find a lot of cars parked in the driveway on Sunday morning. It is very important to have a car here. Although, the public transport services covers the area like Airports, Cargo offices etc. It is still helpful to have your own vehicle. There are a lot of initiatives taken to reduce the population of the car from the street. At the same time, when an automaker shuts down their plant it sends out tremors in the economy. It is like saying, we don't want cars on our streets, but we want to manufacture it, because it helps our economy.

Generally, you find streets relatively empty in the northern parts of Toronto. You don't see many people walking on the streets. The southern Toronto, called "downtown", is generally crowded. Since crowded is a relative term, let me specify more. Here, "crowded" would mean, you find approximately fifty to a hundred persons walking on the road at a given moment. But, if you are in Mumbai, Cairo or Hong Kong, you might find a bus filled with 60 persons or more. There are at least five to six such buses at a busy railway station. Compared to that, downtown of Toronto is not crowded at all.

When I took a walk on the inside streets of Toronto, I found that I was the only person walking on a long stretch of the road. There are a few people walking on the busy intersections of the city. However, downtown area presents a different picture. You see a lot of people on the streets. Since there are many parks which allows the residents to take long walks, the people who walk for pleasure are more in the parks than on the streets.

It is fun for a bicycle enthusiast on the streets of Toronto during summer days. When you use a bicycle, it is more safer for you to wear a helmet to protect your head. The cycle handles are a bit low in order to force you to bow while cycling. That reduces the injury when you fall. Overall, the weather in summer is wonderful.
It is a good idea to check the weather forecast for UV rays before you set out in the Sun. The sunlight can scorch your skin if UV rays are high. With ozone layer getting patched up, after 50 years, there might be more comfortable exposure to sun. Meanwhile, you can protect yourself with different sunscreen lotions.
The houses in this city are in the form of communities. It really gives one a feeling of being close to the nature, while being in the city. However, the number of high-rises is increasing constantly in Toronto.

During winter, it is important to wear winter boots. The snow on the street becomes ice. This ice is slippery. Winter boots give a good grip over slippery surface. If it is a windy day, you can expect to get sore throat due to exposure to cold winds. You need to cover yourself enough to let your body handle the extremities of weather.
When the season changes into/out of the winter, one tends to get sick due to flu. Protecting oneself from weather becomes really important at this time. The temperature drops/rises from 5 to 10 degrees centigrade between early morning and late afternoon. Imagine you leaving for work with warm clothes on and coming back carrying them.
